Join Charlotte Wine & Food Weekend to raise money for Charlotte-area children's charities as we proudly host Spain’s pre-eminent and most iconic winery, Vega Sicilia, and owner Pablo Álvarez, CEO, Tempos Vega Sicilia.

Founded in 1864, Vega Sicilia stood the test of time and achieved icon status for producing wines that earned a high reputation for their complexity and ability to age, with the highest acclaim going to its flagship wine, Unico. In 1982, the Álvarez family purchased the winery and under Pablo’s leadership became the leading winery responsible for the rise of the Ribera del Duero DOC. As Pablo’s passion for wine grew, he expanded the family’s wine empire by founding Alion in the Ribera del Duero; Pintia in Toro; Oremus in Tokaj, Hungary; and most recently, Macán in Rioja - all under Tempos Vega Sicilia.

Learn more about the legend of Vega Sicilia and the man behind its modern rise as you enjoy a multi-course culinary experience inspired by and paired with the wines of Tempos Vega Sicilia. Set amongst the Charlotte skyline on the 41st floor of One Wells Fargo Center, this priceless evening will transport you to Spain and be “un noche inolvidable!”

"Pablo is responsible for leading not only Vega Sicilia to a new ultra-premium level but also has helped the reputation of Spanish wine around the world."
“Vega Sicilia's flagship wine, Único, is one of Spain's most exalted.”
”Vega Sicilia was, and remains, a flag-bearer for tradition.”

Pablo Alvarez.jpg

Pablo Álvarez Mezquiriz (Bilbao, 1954) is the CEO of Tempos Vega Sicilia. He is the owner, along with his siblings, of El Enebro, the equity company of the Álvarez family and is the current Chair of Europvin, which represents Europe's best wine portfolio. He completed his upper secondary studies at schools in Bilbao and Gijón, graduated in Law from the Centro de Estudios Universitarios de Madrid and holds a Diploma in Corporate Legal Advice from the Madrid Business Institute.

Pablo Álvarez held different posts at Eulen, where he was Director from 1980 to 2009. He was appointed as the General Manager of Bodegas Vega Sicilia in 1986 and CEO of that company in 1990, a post that he continues to hold.

During the thirty years he has been at the helm of Vega Sicilia, Pablo Álvarez has turned that winery into a unique group of wines that is renowned worldwide. He has notably improved the quality of the wines, restored the vineyards for the future, set up four new wineries - Alión, Pintia, Oremus and Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild Vega Sicilia - and has driven the growth and international expansion of all their brands.

In any event, Pablo Álvarez, a perfectionist who is never satisfied, is often heard capturing that in a nutshell: "The best is still to be done, the best vintage must be the next one".
