ABOUT SHAFER VINEYARDS
Shafer Vineyards is one of Napa Valley’s most distinguished wineries, celebrated for its iconic hillside estate and uncompromising approach to world-class winemaking. With a lineage of grape growing on the property dating back to 1880, the modern era began in 1972 when the Shafer family replanted their rugged Stags Leap District slopes—an ambitious undertaking that would help redefine what Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon could be. Their inaugural 1978 Cabernet signaled the arrival of a new benchmark.
For more than forty years, Shafer has set the standard for wines of depth, purity, and longevity, earning consistent acclaim from the world’s leading critics, collectors, and sommeliers. At the heart of this legacy is winemaker Elias Fernandez, now crafting his 41st vintage, whose precision, intuition, and relentless pursuit of excellence have shaped some of the most celebrated wines in the world.
Today, Shafer continues to embody the pinnacle of Napa Valley craftsmanship. From its legendary Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon to its meticulously farmed Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, every wine reflects an unwavering commitment to balance, refinement, and a profound sense of place—qualities that have made Shafer a reference point for fine wine around the world.
CHRIS AVERY | CEO - SHAFER VINEYARDS
Christopher Avery is a proven leader in the world of luxury wine—an operator with uncommon range, a brand builder with instinctive clarity, and a steward of some of Napa Valley’s most storied estates. As Chief Executive Officer of Shafer Vineyards, he is guiding one of America’s benchmark wineries into its next era while honoring the legacy that has defined the estate for more than four decades.

His career is marked by a rare blend of strategic precision and creative vision: the ability to strengthen global demand, elevate brand presence, refine hospitality, and build organizational cultures that perform at the highest levels. He has led teams through major brand evolutions, expanded international markets, and positioned estates as global standard-bearers for world-class wine.
Before joining Shafer, Avery was instrumental in the $1B acquisition of DAOU by Treasury Wine Estates and played a central role in shaping the estate’s rise as a global luxury powerhouse. At Darioush, he oversaw a multi-year brand transformation that deepened its cultural identity and modernized its guest experience. Earlier in his career at Opus One, he led global sales and marketing during a pivotal period of growth, strengthening international partnerships and deepening the winery’s connection with top collectors and trade leaders around the world.
At Shafer, Avery leads with discipline, warmth, and an unwavering sense of purpose. He oversees every dimension of the estate from vineyard development and winemaking to marketing, sales, and hospitality-ensuring that Shafer continues to set the standard for Napa Valley excellence and remains one of the region’s defining voices. His stewardship centers on sharpening the winery’s global footprint, elevating the guest experience, fortifying brand identity, and carrying forward the traditions that have shaped Shafer into a benchmark for world-class Cabernet Sauvignon.
A passionate mentor and culture builder, Avery believes deeply in developing teams, preserving multigenerational craft, and creating experiences that resonate on a human level.
